Rolls-Royce convertible debuts in France
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unveiled the new Phantom Drophead Coupé for the first time in France, at the famous Polo de Bagatelle in Paris.

The two-door, four-seater convertible combines the latest in light-weight engineering technology with the finest hand-crafted materials. Each car is individually built by highly skilled craftsmen and women at the company's world headquarters in Goodwood, on the south coast of England.

Eric Neubauer, dealer principal of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Paris, Automobile ZOL S.A., said, "Based on the positive reaction to the Phantom during the last two years, we have had very strong interest in the Phantom Drophead Coupé and look forward to delivering the first cars in late summer."

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Regional Director for Southern Europe, Marco Makaus, said, "France is one of the principal style leaders in Europe. Based on the interest from customers we have had so far, we are convinced that Phantom Drophead Coupé will be a big market success in France."

This year Rolls-Royce will have a three model line-up, as the new Drophead Coupé joins the Phantom and Phantom Extended Wheelbase.
Phantom Silver marks 100 th anniversary of the Silver Ghost
Rolls-Royce has produced a limited edition, named Phantom Silver, to mark the 100 th anniversary of the Silver Ghost. The special model, of which only 25 will be made, pays homage to one of the most famous automotive names of all time.

First built in 1906, specifically to publicise the then new Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. six-cylinder model, the Silver Ghost established the Rolls-Royce reputation for reliability and engineering excellence. The name was coined in 1907 by Rolls-Royce Managing Director, Claude Johnson, by virtue of its silver coachwork and its 'extraordinary stealthiness'. The original Silver Ghost, registered AX-201, competed in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trial, for which it won the gold medal in its class for hill climbing speed and reliability. The Silver Ghost went on in that year to break the world record for a non-stop motor run, covering a London to Glasgow route 27 times, with mileage totaling 14,371 miles.

More than 6,000 "Silver Ghosts" were built between 1907 and 1925, and sold in every corner of the world. The majority are still in good running order.

In tribute to the specifications of the original, the Phantom Silver is finished in a new Bespoke paint, Metallic Ghost Silver. The 21-inch wheels have chrome centres and on top of the grille sits a hallmarked solid silver Spirit of Ecstasy. Inside, Rose Leaf or Crème Light leather is accompanied by seat piping and headrests embroidered with the Rolls-Royce interlinked RR badge. Straight grained Santos Palissander wood veneer is used throughout. The same veneer is also used on a specially designed presentation box that houses the key, two solid silver key fobs and a specially commissioned solid silver Conway Stewart fountain pen.

Rolls-Royce Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, "The Silver Ghost is such a significant model in the history of Rolls-Royce that we felt marking its 100 th anniversary was entirely fitting. Its extraordinary reliability, refinement, comfort and virtually silent running were as important to Rolls-Royce in 1907 as they are today."

Phantom Drophead Coupe makes European debut
The new Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe will make its European debut at the Geneva motor show this week. Production of the new model will begin at the company's UK manufacturing plant at Goodwood in the summer.

The two-door, four-seat convertible is a less formal interpretation of classic Rolls-Royce design than its four-door stable mate, the Phantom. Using the lightweight rigidity of an all-aluminium spaceframe, it marries modern technology to a sleek, streamlined convertible body.

Hand-built using the finest quality materials to the exacting standards of Rolls-Royce, the new Phantom Drophead Coupe is exciting customers around the world.

Speaking ahead of the Geneva show, Graeme Grieve, Sales and Marketing Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, The reaction to the Drophead Coupe has been phenomenal. This year's production has already been allocated and there are currently only a few build slots left in 2008. We are delighted that more than half of the orders are from customers who have never owned a Rolls-Royce before, so the new model is significantly expanding the appeal of our products.

Some of the special design features of the Phantom Drophead Coupe are:

  • Customers can specify a brushed steel bonnet and rear teak deck. The bonnet is machine brushed before being hand finished to ensure a uniform grain throughout.
  • The Phantom Drophead Coupe is based on an advanced aluminium spaceframe. Lightweight and exceptionally strong, it requires over 120 metres of hand-welding.
  • Luggage is housed within a picnic boot, a split tail compartment that opens in two parts giving easy access to 315 litres of space. The lower tailgate provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered.
  • The fabric hood is the largest of any modern convertible car and uses five layers of material to insulate the interior.
  • Power is supplied by a 6.75 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine giving brisk performance and a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds.
Rolls-Royce launches Phantom drophead coupe Detroit
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its new Phantom Drophead Coupe at the Detroit Motor Show on Sunday 7 January. Production of the new car will start at Goodwood in the summer of 2007.

The two-door, four-seat convertible is a less formal interpretation of classic Rolls-Royce design. Using the lightweight rigidity of an all-aluminium spaceframe, it marries modern technology to a sleek, streamlined convertible body.

Its exterior lines echo the timeless styling of the great Rolls-Royce cars: a long bonnet, large-diameter wheels, short front and long rear overhangs and the quintessential dynamic line descending along its flanks. Inside, the design emphasises the airy openness of top-down motoring, embracing the elements and creating a stunning, social environment.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Designer, Ian Cameron, said, This car gave us the chance to think about the very nature of convertible motoring and in particular what it means to Rolls-Royce. Above all we were determined to make this car a joy to live with and engineered it to give years of effortless service to its owner.

A number of features first seen on 100EX, the experimental convertible shown by Rolls-Royce in 2004, have been engineered into the new Phantom Drophead Coupe. Two of the most visually striking of these are the brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar and the teak decking for the rear hood cover. The brushed steel is machine finished to give a uniform grain before undergoing extensive hand polishing to achieve a perfect sheen. At the rear, the teak decking is treated with a carefully blended mix of oils to preserve a natural finish and a long lasting lustre that is as beautiful as it is hardy.

Front opening coach doors have been homologated for the new car and add considerably to the ease of access to the rear seat, as well as to the overall aesthetics. Unique to Rolls-Royce, the doors dramatically transform the Phantom Drophead Coupe's looks, giving a side profile reminiscent of classic sports cars of the '60s. Crucially, they also aid the overall stiffness of the body as the rear hinged doors allow for an uninterrupted A-pillar.

Luggage is housed within a picnic boot, a split tail compartment that opens in two parts giving easy access to the 315 litres of space. The lower tailgate provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered. Careful engineering of the folding soft-top roof means that it stows in a relatively small space resulting in a luggage compartment that remains unaffected regardless of whether the roof is up or down.

The fabric hood is the largest of any modern convertible car and its acoustic insulation is exemplary. Five layers of material ensure that the cabin remains a serene space, even at speed. Lined with cashmere it has been tailored to stow in a relatively small space.

At the core of the Phantom Drophead Coupe is an advanced aluminium chassis, perhaps the single most significant component in delivering the marque's legendary refinement. Lightweight and exceptionally strong, it impacts positively on ride comfort, handling and safety. Hand made, it requires over 140 metres of welding in each chassis. Power is supplied by the same 6.75 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine found in the Phantom saloon, giving brisk performance and a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, The Phantom Drophead Coupe marks the next chapter in our history. While the saloon continues as the brand flagship, the Drophead leads us in a more informal direction, attracting new buyers to the marque. In the coming years other new models will strengthen the company still further.

The Phantom Drophead Coupe has been carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing, yet practical too. Wood, leather, chrome and brushed steel have been used where most appropriate. Form and function have equal billing. The simplicity of the design belies a car built to provide years of effortless service. It will offer owners an unparalleled convertible experience, combining compelling driveability with exceptional engineering, technology and design - hand crafted from the finest materials to an exceptional level of quality.

Rolls-Royce aim for 75 per cent recycling
Rolls-Royce has set a new target to recycle 75 per cent of all waste materials generated at its Goodwood facilities by the end of 2007. As part of the company's commitment to sustainability, a new dedicated waste management centre has been set up at the

manufacturing plant and head office to recycle all types of waste materials.

Employees are encouraged to recycle wherever possible and currently over 60 per cent of all waste items are recycled, from paper and cardboard to glass, cans and bottles, from redundant computer equipment to scrap metals. Parts ordered for production of the cars are delivered to Goodwood packaged in recyclable containers, which are returned for re-use.

Efficient and responsible waste management is a key part of our commitment to protecting the environment, said Ian Robertson Chairman and Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. We cannot ignore or escape the environmental impact of waste materials - from simple items, like paper and cardboard, to more complex materials like paint and oil - and everyone here is encouraged to reduce or recycle waste.

Remnants from the wood shop are utilised by manufacturers of wooden products. Leather off cuts are sold to buyers all over the world for use in other industries, for instance the fashion industry.

Even the landscape debris and the weeds cleared from the lake, in the 42 acre grounds, are composted for use on the Goodwood Estate organic farm.
Phantom cements market leadership in 2005
Another strong year of sales has confirmed the position of the Phantom as the world's leading super-luxury car. Its international appeal has attracted buyers from more than 40 countries around the world in the last 12 months, including a number of emerging markets. In total, 796 cars were retailed, an increase of 0.5 per cent over 2004 and a 15 year high for Rolls-Royce.

Customers from countries including Brazil, Nigeria, Chile, Bulgaria, Algeria, Poland, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan became Phantom owners for the first time in 2005, as well as from the more established markets. Worldwide, the top five dealers were spread across four continents. Beverly Hills was number one for the second year in succession, followed by Tokyo, London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively.

Chairman and CEO Ian Robertson said, We have enjoyed another strong year, with the Phantom now clearly established and the foundations laid for the launch of our new products over the coming months.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will show the extended wheelbase version of the Phantom at this year's Detroit Motor Show, with the intention of launching it in North America by the end of 2006. This is the second model to be built at the company's world headquarters at Goodwood, England, and will be joined by a third - the new convertible - in 2007.

The new extended wheelbase Phantom offers additional interior space for the rear occupants, while maintaining the elegant exterior looks of the standard length Phantom and its first class driving performance. An extra 250mm (10 inches) has been added to the standard Phantom, behind the B-pillar, to create a car with an even more generously proportioned rear passenger compartment. The extra space lends itself perfectly to the addition of bespoke features - the specialist items crafted specifically for individual customers.

Ian Robertson said, While the extended wheelbase model is a highly specialised car we have already seen significant interest from North American buyers. We look forward to launching it here later this year.
Rolls-Royce commemorates 2000th Phantom
Employees at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars celebrated the production of the 2000th Phantom today. Everyone assembled in the courtyard at the award-winning manufacturing plant at Goodwood - in the design of the number '2000' - for a group photograph.

The Phantom is exported all over the world from Goodwood in the South of England and the 2000th motor car is destined for China, which is an important market for Rolls-Royce.

Ian Robertson, Chairman and Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, We will shortly be celebrating another milestone, our third birthday, on 1 January 2006. The intervening months have been an incredible period for everyone at Goodwood. The team is rightly proud of the tremendous results achieved in a remarkably short space of time. We are now looking forward to the next 12 to 18 months, which will see the launch of a new convertible.

In the short period of time since the Phantom was first unveiled at Goodwood in January 2003 it has become the market leader in the super luxury sector.
